Nightwish est un groupe de metal symphonique/gothic metal finlandais créé en 1996.

Le genre de ce groupe peut être qualifié de heavy metal symphonique, ou plus précisément de gothic metal, dont la particularité était la voix de sa chanteuse Tarja Turunen jusqu'à son renvoi.

Ayant suivi une formation de chant lyrique, Tarja utilisait toutes les possibilités qu'offre sa voix sur un accompagnement métal, apportant tantôt une profondeur, tantôt une certaine légèreté que l'on retrouve dans l'opéra.

Le groupe a cependant connu un tournant historique le 21 octobre 2005, puisque Tuomas Holopainen, avec l'accord et le soutien de Marco Hietala, Emppu Vuorinen et Jukka Nevalainen, a décidé de renvoyer Tarja, parce qu'elle ne s'investissait pas assez dans le groupe, privilégiant parfois sa carrière solitaire. De plus, elle n'était, à son goût, plus trop en accord avec l'esprit et la mentalité de Nightwish.

Les quatre membres restants ont l'intention de continuer à faire leur musique, sans changer de style musical, et en engageant une chanteuse, qui aura le redoutable privilège de succéder à Tarja.
